If you have a little one who is emotional and struggles to express his feelings, a drum set can help him express himself constructively. Baby drum sets are a good outlet for stress relief – for your baby. You might be physically cringing at the thought of buying your little one a baby drum set. Try breathing into a paper bag, and then hear us out.

The earliest benefit your little one will see is a boost to his cognitive development. Some studies have shown that children exposed to music at an early age and throughout their education are capable of employing more logic and critical thinking skills than many of their peers.

Apr 9 Artifact of the Week: To study an artifact is powerful and necessary. It is a responsibility that we have as human beings – and as drummers and percussionists – to preserve the stories of our craft and to preserve the names, faces, and teachings of those who came before us. Aaron and I find inspiration in those stories, which is part of the reason why we so enjoy taking the time to help protect that history and discover new editions of it, no matter how small.

This is the story of one small artifact: There was no accompanying title or caption and the smallest date range they could gather was that it was taken between — based on other nearby negatives in the collection. Immediately, this image fascinated me. Clearly there was a reason this moment was captured. As always, discovery begins with questions.

And I had a ton of questions. With some logical reasoning and a little bit of research, I was able to determine that the man receiving the award in the image was the one and only Frank S. Frank Fancher, an oft-overlooked rudimental snare drum legend, posing in his medal-covered drum corps uniform with his drum and his trophies in the early s.

Ludwig’s expansive past is nearly as long as the line of drummers eager to get their hands on the company’s legendary vintage gear. However, with so many years of history under its belt, accurately identifying the year of manufacture for a Ludwig drum is a daunting task for those unfamiliar with the company’s evolution.

While some drummers prefer a very simple mechanism less stuff to break and go wrong , others like to have all the bells and whistles, the more possible adjustments the better. From to , the Super-Ludwig was the flagship of the Ludwig line and the most expensive model in the catalog. But in , Ludwig added another option to the mix — the Sensitive mechanism.

Although it was a neat idea theoretically, there was a design flaw in the Sensitive mechanism that would eventually cause it to be discontinued. Located underneath the top head inside the drum, the coiled wire snares of the Sensitive mechanism were directly in the line of fire from the deep impact of stick tips hitting the calfskin heads that were the only choice at that time. Given the location of the wires and the stretching ability of calfskin, it was only a matter of time until one or more of the wires would take a direct hit and get stretched to the point where the drum would develop a permanent buzz, necessitating replacement of the top snare wires.

By the onset of World War II, when metal drums were discontinued and metal parts severely restricted by the War Powers Act, the sensitive mechanism had already disappeared from the line. Since Conn also owned Leedy Manufacturing, the lines of both companies were severely restricted due to post-War budget constraints and the burden of trying to reintroduce and update two complete lines of drums.

When their flagship Knob-Tension line flopped, Conn decided to get out of the drum business altogether. Shortly after regaining the rights to the family name, the Ludwig family decided to retire the WFL brand and reinstate the Ludwig name. When the parallel mechanism was finally reintroduced in , the first major change was the name. Shortly after the introduction of the new Super-Sensitive, parts supplies dwindled to the point where some pieces of the mechanism had to be reproduced.

Cheap drum kits, or starter sets, usually include a bass drum, a snare, a floor tom, and two rack toms.

Rogers Holiday kit Vintage drums, legendary sounds: When we think of legendary American drums that the golden era of popular music was built on, one of the finest drum sets ever produced was this here ginger Rogers. Although this drum set started life in the catalogues and in the drum stores as a silver glass glitter wrap, time has matured it. The colour change is no indication of a poor quality finish; many drum sets from this era spent their days and more likely, nights in smoky bars and clubs and quite often, tobacco staining can be a factor of the colour change.

Some believe these to be the finest drums ever produced, and the sound, build quality and design would certainly lend well to this accolade. It was his son who, in the s, began producing drums. From until , Rogers shells were a maple five-ply construction, with five-ply reinforcement rings. In , Rogers began offering drums with eight-ply shells without reinforcement rings made by Keller in Manchester, New Hampshire for its XP-8 line.

The shells are absolutely magnificent. Changed the rack tom mount to Rogers S-O-M. Mitch Mitchell and Bonham also swapped their flimsy-by-comparison Ludwig mounts for Rogers. The rack tom mounts feed into a tightening collet, a fixing method borrowed from the automotive machinery industry. Rogers were one of the first to introduce omni-ball mounts.

Artifact of the Week: Faces Without Names

This tradition was continued by Eustache Deschamps , Christine de Pizan c. Its distinctive sound has appeared particularly in jazz and rock songs of the last fifty years.
