Contact The History of the Folding Bike There have been many who have laid claim to the invention of the folding bike. Humorously, a bike manufacturer who shall remain nameless so as to not unduly embarrass them audaciously claims on their website to have produced the world’s first folding bike in Wishful thinking by their marketing department I suppose. The truth is that the folding bike has been around for considerably longer than one might imagine and most claims of being the first are erroneous.
First things first though, you can’t have a folding bike without the invention of the bicycle itself. So a very short history lesson on the bicycle is in order. Here again we have some disputed claims of invention and historians will probably never be able to identify the exact moment of invention. For a while some had claimed that Leonardo Da Vinci invented the bicycle based on a sketch found in his Codex Atlanticus. However, this sketch was later determined to be a forgery, though many historical accounts written before this forgery was discovered still credit Da Vinci as the inventor of the bicycle.
There were a few “pre-bicycles” invented before the appearance of what one would recognize as a bicycle.

Some bike parts have a date code cast or stamped into the piece. This clearly is when the component was made and not when the bike was made, but unless the component or bike manufacturer had lots of stock lying around in inventory, the date should be a fairly good indication of the year of the bike. At least it would be the earliest date that the bike could have been made. Of course, all this assumes the bike has the original component.

Washington Agricultural Commission Mistake: Everybody loves a Gimme Cap, Right? A Washington State agriculture official touring China in handed out bright green baseball caps at every stop but never noticed that none of the men would put them on, or that all the women were giggling hysterically. Thus, legend holds that if you wear a green hat, it means that your wife has cheated on you, and if you give a man a green hat, it means that you have had sex with his wife.
The Chinese delegation was very polite, and finally someone took the agricultural commissioner aside to clue him in. This is a fairly self-explanatory item so I will say no more. Advertisements Founding of Schwinn Ignaz Schwinn was born in Hardheim , Germany in and worked on two-wheeled ancestors of the modern bicycle that appeared in 19th century Europe. Schwinn emigrated to the United States in , where he found similar difficulties. Schwinn’s new company coincided with a sudden bicycle craze in America. Chicago became the center of the American bicycle industry, with thirty factories turning out thousands of bikes every day.
Bicycle output in the United States grew to over a million units per year by the turn of the century. The bicycle boom was short-lived, as automobiles and motorcycles quickly replaced bikes on American streets. Many smaller companies were absorbed by larger firms or went bankrupt; in Chicago, only twelve bicycle makers remained in business. Competition became intense, both for parts suppliers and for contracts from the major department stores, which retailed the majority of bicycles produced in those days.
Realizing he needed to grow the company, Ignaz Schwinn purchased several smaller bicycle firms, building a modern factory on Chicago’s west side to mass-produce bicycles at lower cost. In an atmosphere of general decline elsewhere in the industry, Schwinn’s new motorcycle division thrived, and by was in third place behind Indian and Harley-Davidson.
With no buyers, Excelsior-Henderson motorcycles were discontinued in Putting all company efforts towards bicycles, he succeeded in developing a low-cost model that brought Schwinn recognition as an innovative company, as well as a product that would continue to sell during the inevitable downturns in business cycles. After traveling to Europe to get ideas, F. Schwinn returned to Chicago and in introduced the Schwinn B E Motorbike, actually a youth’s bicycle designed to imitate a motorcycle.

October 20, , The article indicated that the move was done to make it easier to read the serial number, and that the change was made primarily for law enforcement because at the time bike theft was becoming a major problem. Anyway, the article stated that during the transition there would be bikes with numbers in both places, exactly as seen on the tandem in question here. It stated that this was because when the change was made, all frames in existing inventory were simply re-stamped with new numbers on the head tube.
The way it was worded seemed to imply that the complete frames with dropout stamps already existed, and they were then simply re-stamped on the head tube. It also stated that when two stamps would exist on the same bike they would be different, and that in that case the head tube number would take precedence and be the true serial number for the frame. Taken at face value this would suggest that the head tubes were stamped after the frame was complete.
In any case I thought this was very interesting. I wish I still had the article and could make a copy of it, but I only had a chance to read it one time.

A Horse Trail, Not A Bike Trail October, by cliffordzang First off, my wife and I have fitness bikes that we have outfitted to be able to handle crushed limestone trails and have done multiple limestone and gravel trails. This trail was much different. We started on the Stockbridge end and quickly realized that this was a different trail than what we were used to. It was a two-track for much of the beginning mileage. We were still able to make it a third of the way to Hamburg before turning around because my wife ran over a bucket handle that was hit by a lawnmower that had cleared some of the brush on the side.
Luckily, she wasn’t hurt and her bike’s only damage was a bent front fender.
